Choppies is the leading supermarket chain in Botswana targeting the lower to middle-income sectors of Society but increasingly attracting upper middle class consumers.
Mr. Ram Ottapathu formally joined Choppies in 1992 and became CEO shortly thereafter. In 1993, the Company was awarded a Spar franchise in Lobatse, and opened a further store in Gaborone in 1996 under the Family Grocer banner. The Choppies brand was introduced in 2003 and the Company began to expand throughout Botswana. Choppies opened its first store in South Africa in 2008.
Choppies is the leading supermarket grocery retailer in Botswana, with over 50% market share of the formal grocery retail channel. Choppies currently operates 124 supermarkets across Botswana, South Africa and Zimbabwe, of which 72 are in Botswana. Choppies listed its shares on the Botswana Stock Exchange on 26 January 2012.
Of the significant developments that Choppies has been active in, 2014 saw the opening of a distribution Centre in Zimbabwe. Our foresight is to grow into East Africa, with emphasis in Tanzania and Kenya. Choppies believes in potential of the African market hence the continued growth.
